My hairpin crochet work

Here are a couple of examples of my hairpin crochet work.  Its quite versatile.

The first example is a shawl I made, its worked with a mohair mix yarn to make the shawl even more etherial. 

Another example is using hairpin crochet to create jewellery.  I made these earrings using my loom, in the second example I have added in some pretty little beads.

Tackling wire crochet

I've attempted wire crochet a number of times but so far its always ended up with a ball of wire being thrown in the bin ...  So since I have some time on my hands I am going to give it another try.

I have various reels of wire, but I think the safest bet is to try first off with some of the finer stuff, just go for something simple and see how things progress.

First off I decided to just try to crochet with the wire, a simple circle and see how that went.

First lesson is that the wire is quite hard on your fingers, I had to adopt a slightly different approach to handling the wire than I do for yarn - but it seemed to work OK.

Then I thought I'd like to add some beads to the crochet to see how that looked.  Of course the trick is to remember to to "thread" the beads before starting to crochet.... how many times have I ended up having to stitch on beads afterwards because I forgot, not really an option with the wire though.

So this is how I stared, with some fine jewellery wire and some cornelian chips.  I ended up with a quite pretty little bracelet.

White crochet Cuff

I haven't made any jewellery for a while and thought it would be nice to make something other than a necklace, I've already got quite a few of those made.

I always like the way that its possible to create wonderful patterns with crochet, I really like the vintage feel of this particular piece.  Part lace, part solid.

I closed the back with pretty little flower cut buttons.

Christmas Irish Rose Brooch

This is created using No 20 Crochet cotton for the main body of the rose. To make this brooch a Christmas Irish rose I added in DMC Metalic embroidery thread in Gold.

Initially I started creating a standard Irish rose and when I reached the fifth layer of petals I then added in the Gold thread. Then again on the sixth layer of petals I added a final row of Gold.

To finish off the rose I created a center in gold thread as well.

This particular thread is quite difficult to crochet. It tends to split into the individual strands and takes quite a bit of patients to keep the work neat and avoid stray loops.

The thread itself is quite course to work with and it can bite into your fingers when working with it. Fortunately in this particular piece the amount of working with this thread was limited so I managed to avoid too much damage!

I think the effort was worth it in the end, the gold thread catches the light beautifully. I think that it turned out to be a really pretty festive brooch.
